"Chinese education for the family that doesn't speak Chinese at home"

Lily Wagoner
I grew up in a beautiful city named Qingdao in China.   I taught Kindergarten through third grade in China for nine years before participating in the Columbus International Program as an exchange professional.  Once in the United States, I earned my bachelor’s and master’s degree in Education from the Ohio State University.  I have taught 19 years in both private and public schools in Columbus, Ohio.  It has been a thrilling experience as an educator for 28 years.   Currently, I enjoy teaching the lovely first graders at Darby Woods Elementary School.

Just like you, I am also an excited adoptive parent.  Sharing the Chinese culture, language, music and heritage with our COFCC families is a wonderful privilege and a remarkable part of my life.   I am very grateful to be able to serve our community, to learn, grow and to have fun with our COFCC families.

Aina Sun Weaver
Aina has been a teacher and music director for more than 30 years.  She taught music in elementary schools for 18 years in her hometown of Qingdao, China.  Her choruses won many awards.  Since 1995, she has been teaching language and music for the Ohio Contemporary Chinese School.  She has taught cooking, language, and calligraphy for KCAP since 2002.  Aina received the Community Service Award from COFCC in 2007.

Students will learn Chinese language and culture through the use of calligraphy brushes and ink to paint and write Chinese characters and art.

Julia Liu
I am originally from Qingdao, a beautiful coastal city in China.  I love everything about teaching and volunteering.  Working with underprivileged children around the world has always been one of my most passionate goals in life.  I grew up in Dublin, Ohio, graduated with a BA in Fine Arts from Otterbein College, I moved back to China from 2006 to 2009.  I taught and tutored adults and children while living and traveling around Asia.  I traveled to many parts of the world such as Africa and Southeast Asia to work with the children in the past 3 years.   One of my proudest moments while living in China was my volunteering experience at the Shanghai children's home.

I am ecstatic to be back with KCAP this year as a resident teacher.  It's been almost ten years since the first time I started teaching for KCAP.  I was the Language, Calligraphy/art teaching for KCAP from 2001 to 2006, and took the position as the director of KCAP for one year.  I've always felt a close connection to all of the children here at KCAP because I have a very similar cultural and family background.   I am a true Chinese American girl, and I would love to share my experience and knowledge with everyone.  My most important mission is to introduce my students to the beautiful Chinese art and culture, and I am a firm believer that music and art is the key for children to express themselves and to enhance their learning potential.  And that is what I intend to do in my language and calligraphy classes… Teaching Chinese Language and culture through conversations, play/activities, music and art.   Thank you for your trust and support.  I look forward to seeing each and every one of you.
